Greece

The facts, some tips and a
whole lot of opinion.

The Facts:
Glorious in both history and heart, Greece proudly holds 20 inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a further 12 on its tentative list. These 32 remarkable locations are scattered across the mainland and islands, sharing a millennia of stories with millions of visitors. Most sites celebrate the country’s rich cultural heritage, though a few, like the Zagori Cultural Landscape, beautifully blend the natural with the man-made.
Having explored six sites back in 2017, we returned in October 2025 for 6 weeks of further exploration. This time, we drove across the mainland and hopped between islands by ferry, determined to complete the full set of 20, including the Archaeological Site of Olympus, nominated for 2026.

The Tips:
If you can, drive yourself. Some UNESCO sites are reached by routes so spectacular they rival the destinations themselves. Greece is a joy to navigate and every stop provides another village taverna serving cold local beer and unforgettable food. The people we met along the way were some of the warmest we have met on all our years of travel.
We navigated across both the mainland and islands with ease in a number of hire cars. Chios stands out as one of the most beautiful islands we’ve ever seen, while the Zagori region on the mainland was equally breathtaking, a perfect fusion of natural beauty, stone bridges, and ancient mountain villages. Do note, some of those villages have incredibly narrow roads, but take your time, the experience is absolutely worth it.

The Opinion:
To do Greece justice, give it at least five to six weeks. It’s a country to be savoured, not rushed. The ferry network is reliable, though services slow down a little from October, so plan accordingly. Beyond the UNESCO checklist, it’s the warmth of the Greek people that will stay with you the longest, a nation whose hospitality and generosity are every bit as endearing as its ancient heritage.
