The Netherlands - touring time 10 days
First and foremost, we prefer wild camping and we have a van set up that accommodates us very well. Now, in the Netherlands wild camping is strictly illegal with fines ranging from €150 to €500 per person, and the law is definitely enforced.
In saying that, the Netherlands is also very accommodating with a lot of paid camp sites that are very well equipped and, in general, a good price.
Our first site was a paid, full service site which had 35 spaces in a very small area as vans are expected to camp close to each other in these paid sites. While incredibly clean and providing all the required services, we did not like having vans in touching distance where we could also hear their TVs. A lot of the sites we saw, stayed at and looked at on apps, were the same and provided no cover such as trees or bushes to break up the severe layout to the pitches. So we looked again on the apps for different options and tried the dairy farms which, while not having all of facilities each time, were cheaper, smaller and provided a modicum of privacy or, at the very least, space from your neighbour.
Travelling the Netherlands is easy and aesthetically interesting. We did not realise just how much of this country was canals, paddocks and dairy farms. Approximately 15,000 dairy farms in a tiny country is a lot! But it is beautiful, there is a plethora of a cheese and gourmet food shops and farm gates and the canals are simply lovely. A self drive boat tour in Giethoorn is a must on a sunny day. We plan to return to spend more time just enjoying what this country has to offer.
